Preparing for medical residency or fellowship applications involves countless details. Your ERAS headshot is one of the first opportunities to present yourself professionally.
At Panhandle Headshots, I photograph medical students and physicians preparing for the next stage of their medical careers. My studio is located in Navarre, Florida, serving applicants throughout Pensacola, Fort Walton Beach, Destin, and Northwest Florida.
My goal is to create a professional headshot that looks confident, approachable, and—most importantly—like you.
Why Your ERAS Headshot Matters
Your ERAS photograph accompanies your residency or fellowship application and helps programs put a face to your name.
A professional photograph should communicate confidence and approachability without looking overly posed or heavily retouched. Good lighting, thoughtful posing, and natural expressions make a meaningful difference.
While your qualifications and application are what matter most to residency and fellowship programs, a polished photograph helps you present yourself professionally.
What to Expect During Your ERAS Headshot Session
One of the things I enjoy most about headshot photography is working directly with clients to find their strongest expressions. Your ERAS session is a collaborative process, designed to help you feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera.
Professional Lighting and Posing
I’ll guide you through subtle adjustments to your posture, head position, and expression. You don’t need to know how to pose—that’s my job. We’ll work together to find an expression that looks natural, confident, and approachable.
Reviewing Your Photographs Together
Rather than simply taking photographs and sending you a gallery afterward, I enjoy sitting down with clients to compare expressions and select their favorite images. We’ll review what works best and choose the photograph that represents you professionally while still looking like you.
Natural, Professional Retouching
Your selected photograph receives professional retouching to refine the image while preserving your natural appearance. The goal isn’t to change how you look, but to present you at your professional best.
ERAS-Ready Digital Photograph
Your final photograph is prepared according to the applicable ERAS image specifications, so you’ll receive a digital file ready for upload with your residency or fellowship application.
ERAS Photograph Requirements
ERAS has specific technical requirements for applicant photographs, including image dimensions, file format, and file-size limitations.
At Panhandle Headshots, I prepare your selected photograph according to the applicable ERAS specifications, so you don’t have to worry about resizing or formatting the image yourself.

What Should You Wear for an ERAS Headshot?
Professional attire that complements your appearance generally works best for ERAS headshots.
For many applicants, a suit jacket, blazer, or professional top provides a polished, confident appearance. Solid colors and simple clothing typically photograph well, keeping attention on your face rather than your outfit.
I also recommend choosing clothing that fits comfortably and reflects how you want to present yourself professionally.
For more detailed recommendations, read my What to Wear for Your ERAS Headshot guide.
When Should You Schedule Your ERAS Headshot?
I recommend scheduling your ERAS headshot several weeks before your residency or fellowship application deadline. This allows plenty of time to review your photographs, select your favorite image, complete professional retouching, and prepare your final ERAS-ready digital photograph.
For applicants preparing for the upcoming fellowship application cycle, December-cycle ERAS applications open in November 2026, with programs beginning their review in December. Scheduling your session early helps ensure your photograph is ready when you need it.
Because individual programs may establish their own application deadlines, applicants should confirm the dates relevant to their specialty and application cycle.
